Grading in terms of academics refers to the process of applying standardized measurements for varying levels of achievements in a course. Grades can be assigned as letters (usually A through F), as a range (for example, 1 to 6), as a percentage, or as a number out of a possible total (often out of 100).

In many tertiary institutions, grades are averaged to create a grade point average (GPA). GPA is calculated by using the number of grade points a student earns in a given period of time. GPAs are often calculated for high school undergraduate, and graduate students, and can be used by potential employers or educational institutions to assess and compare applicants.

cumulative grade point average (CGPA), sometimes referred to as just GPA, is a measure of performance for all of a student’s courses.

For a student to calculate his or her GPA, is important that He or She takes note of the following :

Step 1: You should know the grade points assigned to every grade you achieved.
Step 2: You should know the credits hours for every specific course you took.

To calculate the GPA of the student with a given result, You should follow the formula below:

  • Grade Point Average (GPA) formula=  Total Credit Hours * Total Grade Points

How to Calculate GPA — University of Ghana GPA

To show you how to calculate your GPA lets make this assumptions. These are the grades you had in a fictitious university.

  • Basic Math (3 credit hours)  A
  • Basic Science(4 credit hours)   B2
  • Basic English (2 Credit hours)   B2
  • Intro to Agric(3 credit hours)  C5
  • with A= 4.0
  • B2=3.5
  • B3=3.25
  • C4=3.0
  • C5= 2.75
  • Calculate GPA= (Sum of each (Credit hour * its Numerical value of Grade))/ Total credit hours
  • GPA= [(3*4.0)+(4*3.5)+(2*3.5)+(3*2.75)] / (3+4+2+3)
  • =[(12.0)+(14.0)+(7.0)+(8.25)] / (12)
  • =(41.25) / (12)
  • =3.43
  • Therefore the GPA is 3.43
