In the year 2015, AngloGold Ashanti (AGA) reduced its footings in Obuasi after over a century of operations in the area. The town almost became a ghost town when it lost its mainstay of the economy, and this called for an intervention to reignite and diversify the local economy. Subsequently, an Establishment Committee comprising representatives from the Municipal Assembly, AGA, the Traditional Council, and KNUST was constituted. The Management of the Obuasi Campus in collaboration with the Colleges in the Main KNUST Campus facilitates the running of academic programs. The new Campus started with eleven academic programs in 2019. Presently, fifteen undergraduate programs (including Seven Engineering Programs, Four Business Administration Programs, Three Allied Health Sciences Programs, and One Science Program) are run on the Campus. With a foundation student population of 343 in 2019, the Obuasi Campus can now boast of a student population of 1063 made up of 67% male and 33% female as of the 2020/2021 academic year.
