Education Minister explains 3 modes of writing lesson notes as a teacher
Writing of lesson notes by pre-tertiary teachers especially basic school teachers/facilitators has become topical issues making headlines on the frontpage of key national news papers and websites or online news portals.
Teachers are in dilemma as to whether they will write a lesson note or not following the earlier pronouncement of the Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and the Education Minister Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum that, writing of lesson notes is a thing of the past as government begins distribution of TM1 laptops to Ghanaian teachers.
The earlier pronouncement has brought some relief and stress to teachers on the subject matter. But, it appears that, the teachers still face challenges with their head teachers and School Improvement Support Officer (SISO) at the school level and GES officials at the District/metropolitan/Municipal Education Directorates for not writing lesson notes following the earlier directive.
In clarifying the issue, the Minister of Education, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum has said that as a teacher, you must prepare lesson notes.
Speaking in an interview on Peace FM monitored by Coverghana.com.gh, the Education Minister indicated that the mode of preparation is solely based on the teacher.
Explaining further, he indicated that the teacher can either choose to write, type or print the lesson notes to help the smooth and effective delivery of his/her lessons.
Dr. Adutwum also said that the government’s “One Teacher One Laptops Initiative” were given to the teachers to ease the burden of copying the notes into lesson notebooks everyday.
The Minister of Education’s position on writing of lesson notes is very clear. He has said times without number that writing of lesson notes is critical to teaching but in this 21st century, a typed and printed note should also be accepted.
What teachers want him to do now is to instruct the Director General of GES to issue official directive to Head teachers and SISOs to accept printed lesson notes in other to put an end to this confusion.
