UNIVERSITY OF GHANA NURSING SCHOOL REQUIREMENTS

The University of Ghana runs an undergraduate program leading to the award of Bachelor of Science in Nursing. Beginning the 2010/2011 Academic year, the School started the 4year degree program with its students graduating in one of the specialty areas of mental health nursing, pediatric nursing, midwifery, general nursing, and community health nursing.

The School is one of the best Nursing and Midwifery leading schools in the country currently, offering plausible, high standard, and competitive Nursing and Midwifery courses that are comparable to other programs worldwide. With that, the school has established a long term history of providing quality health professionals of “choice” to the region, state, and national healthcare workforce at large.

The school’s renowned faculty is highly focused on student academic success. The faculty is dedicated to bringing real life experiences into the classroom and clinical setting to enhance the learning outcomes of its students. 

Currently, the School is offering BSc, MSc, and MPhil programs. It is worthy to note that the University of Ghana School of Nursing and Midwifery is making every effort to make all students comfortable in their academic pursuits. The students are therefore being encouraged to reciprocate by making the most of what the University has to offer.

COMPOSITION OF THE SCHOOL OF NURSING AND MIDWIFERY PROGRAMS.

The programs have both theory and practical components. Every academic year has two semesters with 16 weeks in each semester. Students undertake 6 weeks of clinical at the end of every academic year and 3 weeks during each semester.

University of Ghana Bachelor of Science in Nursing has options in:


√ General Nursing

√ Community Health Nursing√ Pediatric Nursing

√ Mental Health Nursing

Applicants can select any of the options provided by the University.

UNIVERSITY OF GHANA NURSING SCHOOL ENTRY REQUIREMENTS:

Core :

Credit passes in English, Core Mathematics, Integrated Science & Social Studies is strictly a basic necessity.

Electives :

Credit passes in three electives from any of the combinations below:


• Chemistry, Physics, Biology or Elective Mathematics
• General Agriculture, Physics & Chemistry
• Three General Arts Electives
• Two General Arts Electives plus Food & Nutrition.


Any three of the following Electives

Economics, Management in Living, Food & Nutrition, Chemistry, General Knowledge in Art and French.


Bachelor of Science in Midwifery


Core:

Credit passes in English, Core Mathematics, Integrated Science & Social Studies

Electives:

Credit passes in three electives from any of the combinations below:

  • Chemistry, Physics, Biology or Elective Mathematics
  • General Agriculture, Physics & Chemistry
  • Three General Arts Electives
  • Two General Arts Electives plus Food & Nutrition
  • Any three of the following Electives: Economics, Management in Living, Food & Nutrition, Chemistry, General Knowledge in Art and French.

UNIVERSITY OF GHANA DEGREE IN NURSING ENTRY REQUIREMENTS IN DETAIL


Two categories of applicants are considered to the Bachelor of Science in Nursing Program:

• West Africa Senior High School Certificate or its equivalent.
• Diploma in Nursing Holders (enter at Level 200)
WASSCE Applicants

General University requirements are applied with regards to school requirements.
In addition, to the above, applicants must have:

  • A minimum of C6/D in Core courses
  • A minimum of C6/D in each of the elective subjects preferably science electives.

Diploma Holders


Two categories of diploma holders will be considered for admission :

  • Holders of Diploma in Nursing Education / Administration from a recognized University should have a minimum of B+ average or second class upper.
  • Holders of a Diploma in nursing from a recognized institution of nursing with a minimum of CGPA of 3.25.

GRADUATE STUDIES

Master of Science (MSc) / Master of Philosophy (M.Phil) in Nursing


The School also runs a Master of Science (MSc) and Master of Philosophy (MPhil) in Nursing programs for 12 and 24 months duration respectively.

The candidate for admission should have:

  • BA/BSc in Nursing with a minimum of second class lower division,
  • Must be a registered nurse and practiced nursing for not less than 2 years and
  • Pass a selection interview

Pediatric in Nursing program – MPhil


The Pediatric Nursing Program is a collaboration between the School of Nursing, College of Health Sciences, University of Ghana, Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, the Ministry of Health, the Ghana Health Service, Nursing and Midwifery Council of Ghana and the SickKids International of Canada.

The 12-month Certificate in Pediatric Nursing Program ensures integration of theory with practice by incorporating didactic teaching and learning sessions, interactive workshops with case-based learning, pediatric skill development, simulation and intensive clinical placement opportunities in diverse practice settings.

The program which is being sponsored by the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) and supported by the SickKids Foundation of Canada is being hosted by the School. Plans are far advanced to run the pediatric nursing program at the master’s level.

DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY (Ph.D.) PROGRAM IN NURSING ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Applicants with a good first degree in nursing or Midwifery and research Master’s degree in nursing or Midwifery (MPhil, MSc, MN) or research Masters in any related discipline with a minimum of 2.5 grade point and above will be admitted into the PhD in Nursing program.

Prospective students should be proficient in English language. Applicants with a good grade in research methods and statistics at the Masters level as well as a conference presentation and scientific publication will have an added advantage.

Persons applying to pursue a program leading to the award of a PhD shall:

i. Write a selection examination

ii. Attend an interview organized by the School

iii. Submit and defend a proposal during admission interview.

Requirements for Graduation

A minimum of 75 credits units would be required for graduation. The total breakdown is as follows:

Year 1 Semester 1 courses 9 – 12 credits

Year 2 Seminar I 3 credits

Year 3 Seminar III 3 credits

Year 4 Seminar IV 3 credits

Thesis 45 credits
