IS UNIVERSITY OF GHANA ON STRIKE ?
The University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) called on its members to engage in an indefinite strike on January 10, 2022.
The UTAG stated that this action is due to “worsening conditions of service” without sufficient response from the employer. The association had no other option but to lay down their tools and go on an indefinite strike till their needs are met.
The University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) directed all the members of the Association to withdraw services indefinitely despite directive from labour commission to return to the classroom.
This unfortunate announcement was made by UTAG to its 15 member branches which are all public universities all over the country.
All that the UTAG members are seeking from the government is the to restoration of their conditions of service which both parties agree in the year 2012.
Normally, Basic Plus Market Premium of lecturers is supposed to be $2,084.42, UTAG however say the current arrangement reduce their basic premium to $997.84.
This was after their independent emergency UTAG meeting which was intended to take decision on calls by labour commission to return to class.
In an Inside statement which they released, UTAG stated “fifteen member branches after independent emergency meeting and general members express their dissatisfaction with the directive” Dr Asare Asante-Annor talk.
the decision to continue the strike action is defiance against National Labour Commission who describe the move as “illegal.”
