Kwame Nkrumah University of Science And Technology is one of Ghana’s most prestigious tertiary institutions which focuses on science and technology.

Many of Ghana’s notable personalities are alumnae of this great tertiary institution.

I know most of you have heard of KNUST traditional halls and have probably been wondering what exactly they are.

What You Need To Know About KNUST Traditional Halls 

The renowned science and technology centred tertiary institution has six traditional halls and three executive hostels for accommodating students especially first year students.

Below is a brief description of KNUST’s traditional halls.

Africa Hall (The Domites):


Prior to the 2018 university’s policies, The Domites was a male dominated hall(now a mixed hall). It is noted as the best residence halls in KNUST.

Africa Hall boasts of a modern internet café, mini basketball court, games area, salon, chapel, laundry, a modern mini-market, and a properly run kitchen that provides food.


Independence Hall(The Spartans):

This is KNUST prime residence hall. It was named Independence Hall because it was inaugurated in 1959 as a way of celebrating Ghana’s independence which was on 6th March, 1957.

It is a unisex residential hall. It has 198 rooms in the main hall and 96 rooms in an eight(8)-storey annex.

Independence Hall is known as the top residence hall in the Vice Chancellor’s Excellence Awards. 

It boast of a serene surroundings with a dining hall, a communication centre, a gym, a chapel, a salon, a games area, a mini-mart, and an internet café.

Queens Hall (The Royals):

This hall was specially designed to honour the past monarch of England, Queen Elizabeth(II) who died in 2022.

It was commissioned in November 1959 by the Duke of Edinburgh.

The Queens Hall is noted for its contemporary internet café, communication centre, badminton court, salon, games area, gym, gift shop, shopping centre, and a kitchen that serves food are among the amenities offered by the hall.

Queens Hall is a mixed residence hall with 294 rooms right in the middle of the KNUST campus.

Republic Hall(The Mongols):

As a way of honouring Ghana’s republican status, the Republic hall was built. It was mainly a male dominated hall but was changed a mixed hall in 1991. It is the hall with the most recognized hall week celebrations.

First year students often dominate this hall. It has 198 rooms in the main block and 96 rooms in the annex.

The Rupublic hall is recognized by its Infamous Cockrel and is known for its  modern mini-basketball court, chapel, games room, salon, gift shop, kitchen that serves food, and a Junior Common Room called “Cock Tarven”.

Unity Hall(The Continental):

This is the only residence hall on campus having both a radio station, Continental Radio 96.lfm, and the cosiest, friendliest, and largest Junior Common Room.

It was initially a male hall but was changed  to a mixed hall on August 2018.

Unity Hall is noted for its well-stocked supermarket, Conti’s shopping centre which contains a sophisticated internet café, communication and business centre, a basketball court, a games room, a boutique and gift store, a barbering salon, a kitchen that serves meals, and a basketball court.

The Unity Hall  is the largest residential hall on campus and also in West Africa with 432 rooms.

What You Need To Know About KNUST Traditional Halls 

University Hall(Katanga):

This hall was initially a male residence before it was changed to its mixed status in 2018. Its arch rival is Unity Hall.

It is noted for a barbershop, a games room, a chapel, a mini-market, a communication centre, an internet café, a kitchen that serves food, as well as a very entertaining and active junior common area

The main hall with its 198 rooms can accommodate up to 792 students and the annex’s 95 rooms can house up to 380 students.


How do I choose a hall in KNUST?

1. Login with your Application Number and PIN.

2. Select the Make a reservation button to view available accommodation.

3. Read and accept the accommodation instructions.

4. Select accommodation from the list available.

5. Logout of the system and proceed to a paypoint to pay residential fees.

What is the biggest hall in KNUST?

KNUST Senior High School is a Class A Institution according to the West African Examination Council and the Ghana Education Service. It is a coeducational school, with an enrollment of about 900 boys and 1010 girls.

What grade is accepted in KNUST?

An equivalent of the relevant program with an aggregate of 24 or better (WASSCE: A 1-C6/SSSCE A-D). D7, E8 & F9 are not acceptable for KNUST admission. International baccalaureate holders need grades four and above at a higher level in three relevant subjects.

How many rooms are in Unity Hall?

It is the largest halls of residence in West Africa. Unity Hall is the largest hall with an original accommodation capacity of 448 rooms but presently have 36 extra flats. It is an all-male hall with modern facilities. Members are known as “Continentals”.
