Ranks, Promotions And Qualifications In Ghana Education Service (GES) – 2024

Introduction

Every year, the Ghana Education Service conducts promotion for staff who are due to move up in rank.

The promotions are done to prepare personnel for higher positions. Promotions are also meant to reinforce or motivate staff to give off their best in the discharge of their duties. Promotions also lead to the enhancement of the salary of staff of the service.

Staff of the Service look up to promotions every year and prepare to take advantage of the opportunity to move up in rank.

Both Teaching and Non-Teaching Staff Promotions are under the ambit of the GES. Various means of assessment for promotions are used to determine which personnel should be promoted.

About the Ranks

Below are the various Ranks and how to Qualify for them In Ghana Education Service (GES) -2022

1. Superintendent II (gradually fading away due to the posting of Diploma Teachers from the Colleges of Education)
2. Superintendent I (gradually fading away due to the posting of Diploma Teachers from the Colleges of Education)
3. Senior Superintendent II

Those on the Rank of Senior Supt II are promoted to Senior Superintendent I based on their work output which are assessed and recommended as such. Work Inspection is used for promotions at this level.

4. Senior Superintendent I

Promotions from Senior Supt. I to Principal Superintendent are done through an Aptitude Test. Average of 4 complete years should have been spent on the Rank of Senior Supt. I to qualify one to apply for the Rank of Principal Superintendent.

5. Principal Superintendent

Promotions from Principal Superintendent to Assistant Director II are done through an Aptitude Test. Average of four (4) complete years on Principal Superintendent qualifies one to apply for promotion to the Assistant Director II.

6. Assistant Director II

Promotions from Assistant Director II to Assistant Director I are done through an Aptitude Test. Average of four (4) complete years on Assistant Director II qualifies one to apply for promotion to the Assistant Director I.

7. Assistant Director I

Promotions from Assistant Director I to Deputy Director  are done through an Aptitude Test. Average of four (4) complete years on Assistant Director I qualifies one to apply for promotion to the Deputy Director.

8. Deputy Director

Promotions from Deputy Director to Director II  are done through an Interview session with the Panel made up of carefully selected individuals from Public Service/GES. Average of four (4) complete years on Deputy Director qualifies one to apply for promotion to the Director II.

9. Director II

These are eligible to be posted as District Directors of Education. Per our checks, the critical nature of the position means that there must be availability of vacancies before Interview may be conducted for those who are due. Backlog of previous successful applicants may have to be posted to avoid piling up more numbers). GES Council and Public Service Commission play crucial roles in the interviews for this Top Level position.

10. Director I

These are eligible to be posted as Regional Directors of Education. Per our checks, the critical nature of the position means that there must be availability of vacancies before Interview may be conducted for those who are due. Backlog of previous successful applicants may have to be posted to avoid piling up more numbers). GES Council and Public Service Commission play are instrumental in the interviews for this Top Level position.

11. Deputy Director General  : There are two persons appointed to this position.                                              Deputy Director General for Management Services                                                                                     Deputy Director-General for Quality and Access

12. Director General

The Director-General shall provide strategic leadership for the implementation of education policy, and provide technical and administrative direction for the Service.
