BORN TO THE HUSTLE. (How I moved from growing in an orphanage to becoming who I am today.)
Harry Bekoe, popularly known as Harry Beks is a Public and Motivational Speaker, a Professional Nurse, Avid Volunteer, Chief Executive Officer of WRiTE4CHANGE and a Manager at Elite Books Incorporated.
In an article titled YOU ARE THE ONE; he shared his story of how he transitioned from a timid, aimless boy who was lackadaisical about his future to who he is today.
His story reads;
I left my parent at the tender age of twelve(12) to live under foster care. I helplessly battled with inferiority complex, low self-esteem and identity crisis.
ANOTHER FACE in the crowd I was. I found myself on earth and I was following the wind and doing time.
Opportunities to break forth sprung up in 2009 and 2010 but it was not long before I coiled back into being just who I was good at – meek, humble and a yes boy.
In me, was a BEAST seeking an outlet from this personal Zoo! I knew I could do better! I wanted to just scream the chains off my body but it was not as easy as that!
In August 2014, I have had it. I was tired of playing by the rules and bargaining with voices in my head.
I gained late admission to nursing school. New environment, new people.It was my first time leaving the orphanage to be alone since 2006.
That freedom felt strange. I knew my time had come to write a new chapter to my life.
The Decision That Changed My Life.
I made a decision;
- To speak out.
- To be my best self.
- To seek all the knowledge available in books for life.
- To stay true to who I am and
- To serve God.
I never looked back! It was not a bread and butter experience trying to change myself.
I realized working on myself was the greatest work yet the most fulfilling task I ever engaged in. It was challenging but it was entirely worth it.
It brought me new friends, a lot of happiness, love, great mentors and a community of positive people.
I made an important decision and a prayer, that when I come out of it, I will help others in the same situation.
The decision was that;
- In the place of playing the blame game, I am taking responsibility for my life in all aspects.
The dependency on others for everything was broken in my life. I still reach out for support because no one is an island.
However, I am not a chronically broken burden on others for help, especially for the most basic needs.
- In the place of complaining, I am practicing gratitude.
I find myself living better and happier appreciating what I have than lamenting on what I do not.
Harry further stated that; “I started appreciating the friends I have and have stopped crying about those who left.”
I realized, there is always something to be grateful for. One of such is my daily positive energy, motivation and approach to life.
With gratitude, every other thing I cried for is also moving towards me.

I strongly believe that at birth, we all came with the most important raw material to create the life we want.
Our needs may differ in life, but the same raw material is required to create them.
The mind, through our thoughts can create anything; happiness, money, properties etc.
Learning how to master, focus and own our thoughts is where the major problem lies for many people.
It takes one thing to have a mind and another to own and use it to the maximum!

He succinctly asks that you pin the truths below to your heart till it completely transforms you.
- You are not just another face in the crowd. You are the main person, the original.
- You can say yes to yourself today and in a space of four (4) years, your life would be a wonder.
- There is no one going to care for you than you will for yourself. The earlier you understand this and start working on yourself and your dreams, the better.
- Vote yourself out from the league of playing it small. In fact, it is better to play it big and fail than to play it small and fail!
