Law degree entry requirements

The post-first degree programs focus on developing talented individuals with fully developed theoretical and practical knowledge of the law.

Before starting your application process, it is strongly recommended that you read and review the entry requirements carefully together with all relevant information and guidelines for prospective applicants in order to get rid of any unforeseen contingencies.

Please follow carefully all requirements and instructions given below :

Entry Requirements for a Law degree

1. Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (SSCE) and West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) Candidates.

The general requirements for admission of WASSCE and SSSCE candidates to first-degree programs are three (3) credit passes in three core subjects and three (3) credit passes in three elective subjects.

i. SSSCE Candidates: Credit Passes (A-D) in six (6) subjects comprising three (3) core subjects, including English Language and Mathematics plus three (3) relevant elective subjects.
ii. WASSCE Candidates: Credit Passes (A1-C6) in six (6) subjects comprising three (3) core subjects, including English Language and Mathematics, plus three (3) relevant elective subjects.

2. General Certificate of Education (GCE) Advanced Level Candidates
Passes in three (3) subjects (at least, one of the passes should be Grade D or better). Also, the applicant must have had credit passes (Grade 6) in five GCE Ordinary Level subjects including English Language, Mathematics and a Science subject for (for non-science) and an Arts subject (for Science students).

The programme is for a duration of four (3) academic years.


The minimum entry qualification is a Second Class (Lower Division) Degree in any discipline from a recognised University (i.e. Universities recognised and/or accredited by the National Accreditation Board of Ghana).



Ghanaian Applicants

The admission forms of Law institutions for online application or E-VOUCHERS can be obtained by Ghanaian applicants for GH¢200.00 at the following banks: Ecobank, Republic Bank, Agricultural Development Bank, GCB Bank, Zenith Bank, Universal Merchant Bank, Consolidated Bank Ghana (CBG), Prudential Bank and Fidelity Bank.


International Applicants

International applicants should NOT buy the e-voucher. They should use the following link to access the online application form for completion and submission.

All applicants are expected to pay the University a non-refundable application processing fee of US$110.00. This fee can be paid directly or wire transferred into the University of Ghana ECOBANK Account.

The pay-in-slips together with applicants’ certificates/result slips should be scanned and attached to the application form before submission online. The certificates/ results slips should be scanned into one PDF or Word document and attached to the application form.
Note that no application will be processed without proof of payment of the fee.

Applicants must in addition provide or submit the following required documents online before the given application deadline, namely: –

  • One (1) copy of ORIGINAL CERTIFICATE authenticated by the institution awarding degree;
  • Three (3) Academic Referee reports;
  • Please provide, in your own handwriting, a candid evaluation of yourself as a person, discussing in order of importance to you the personal characteristics you feel are your strengths and those you feel are your weaknesses. The written self-evaluation must be signed by you with your usual signature;

The DEADLINE for the submission of applications online and also for the submission of all of the above required and mentioned documents to the School of Law will be communicated in the admission requirements. Owing to high demand late or incomplete admission will not be considered nor processed.

N/B:  Be sure, to put your full name as the same appears on all your supporting documents and to write your Serial Number (as it appears on the e-voucher) on all the above documents before submission. The name of the program being applied for should also be written on all documents. All documents should be in English. Documents not in English should be accompanied by accredited translations in English.



Another requirement for the law degree for any recognized institution in Ghana is an in person entrance examination.

Qualified short-listed applicants will be expected to take a selection examination which will attract a non-refundable examination fee of Five Hundred Ghana Cedis Only (GH¢ 500 .00) for both Ghanaian and International Applicants. The date for the Entrance Examination is mostly stated in the admission letter. Applicants who pass the Entrance Examination will go through an admission interview process scheduled for by the school administration.

Applicants should kindly take note that, the dates for Entrance Examinations and Interviews are provisional.

What is the general entry requirements for law degree in Ghana?
