The National Teaching Council (NTC) is an agency of the Ministry of Education mandated by the Education Regulatory Bodies Act, 2020 (Act 1023) to promote teacher professionalism in Ghana.
NTC license and register teachers, keep up-to-date database of teachers, conduct teacher licensure examination, develop and periodically review professional standards and code of ethics and provide framework for the Continuous Professional Development (CDP) of teachers.
As one of its functions, the NTC is determined to license private school teachers.

Its aim is to blot out teachers without professional teaching licenses from all private schools in the country.
The Executive Secretary, Mr. Christian Addai Poku stated that, “The National Teaching Council will ensure that any person who teaches in a private or public school has been certified through the licensure exams.”
He further said that, “his outfit is collaborating with proprietors of private schools on a roadmap to remove unqualified teachers on their payroll.”
He also outlined that, “it will soon be impossible for private schools to employ teachers who have not written the compulsory licensure exams.”
In conformity with the National Teaching Council decision, the Ghana National Council of Private School Teachers (GNACOPS) stated that; “The license cost will be absorbed by private school owners to lessen the burden on the teachers.
This will also ensure that only qualified or eligible teachers are registered to be issued the provisional license.”
Citing Section 79 of the Education Regulatory Bodies Act, 2020 (Act 1023), Mr. Enoch Gyetuah said, “it is prohibited for a school owner not knowingly or negligently employ a person as a teacher in his/her school unless the teacher is licensed.”
