The leadership of the three major teacher unions in the country, the Ghana National Association of Teachers GNAT, National Association of Graduate Teachers NAGRAT, and Coalition of Concern Teachers Ghana CCTGH has called for the introduction of Cost of living allowance (COLA) for teachers and Education Service workers.

According to the teacher unions, the recent increase in prices of fuel without prior notice, the incessant increase in prices of foodstuff and other consumables goods are skyrocketing to the detriment of helpless Ghanaian teachers and citizenry is worrying and disturbing.

They explained that they recognize the economic challenges that their members (teachers) are facing as well as other public sector workers. They added that teachers’ net salaries (take-home pay) do not take teachers home even though teachers still do their best to educate Ghanaian children.

The teacher unions therefore called on government as a matter of urgency to institute a Cost of living Allowance (COLA) allowance for teachers to help cushion them as cost of living rises.

The management of the teacher unions wants the government to Institute COLA allowance to pull their members (Teachers) out of the economic hardship of teachers.
